There was a time, not that long ago (15 years or so), in Charlotte – the world center of stock car racing – not only were all 3 series races on the radio, but so was qualifying. Today you’re lucky if you can find a Cup race on the radio.
But here’s a sure sign that Charlotte has all but abandoned the entity that put it on the map. ( Sorry, banking industry, you may bring interest, but you don’t bring excitement to the general population. ) Our local ABC affiliate decided to preempt one of the most anticipated Nascar events of the year- Bristol Night Race– for a PRESEASON NFL game. But surely, you say, at least the Carolina Panthers were playing. Alas, you would be wrong. To be fair, WSOC TV allowed a UHF (and sister) station to carry the race.
And this is the state of Nascar even with one of the best seasons in history playing out what with record pole speeds, an exciting Race to the Chase, and stimulating Knock-Out Qualifying. Let’s just hope the final 4 at Homestead are not 21st, 22nd, 23rd and 24th in the actual points standings. Could happen. Could also be another nail in Nascar’s coffin.
