The last time Nascar took meaningful and decisive action was in response to someone dying. The safety improvements have been vast, effective, and, with little or no objection, very expensive.
Will we have to wait for a similar event to compel Nascar to step up again? Secret double probation and pocket change fines don’t cut it. For a professional take on the subject, I suggest Tom Sorensen’s article in the Charlotte Observer.
Speaking of “secret” actions: Nascar seems to subscribe to the adage about any publicity being good publicity. They’re getting great press (well, maybe not “great”, but press) for their John Doe fining system. Again, for professional takes on the subject I refer you to Jim Utter at thatsracin.com and Kenny Bruce at scenedaily.com.
See you next week – God willin’ and the crick don’t rise.
